Research: Fairy Tale inspired Artwork

I have been looking at artwork, paintings, sculptures etc, that are influenced by or based on Fairy Tales, including Rumplestilstkin, as inspiration for the style that I want my stop motion to be in, and also to see how other people interpret Fairy Tales that can be quite dark.

Fairytales have been a major source of inspiration in many forms of art for centuries. The stories are well known by most people and the stories created fantastic and interesting illustrations, paintings and photographs, and still serve as inspiration for art works today. People love the fantasy in them, it helps them to escape from reality and appreciate something far from reality. The dark and creepy stories were also once told to children to stop them misbehaving.

The Romantic Era of art, in the 19th Century started with the french revolution and lasted until around 1900. During this period, the Brothers Grimm collected popular fairy tales in Germany, like Snow White, Cinderella and Hansel and Grethel. At the same time, Delacroix, Friedrich, Waterhouse, Richter, Bierstadt and Cole were creating visual art. Paintings from this era often had a very fairy tale like feel to them.
